Red Maple - Acer Rubrum
Do not let the name fool you. This tree has nice, medium-sized green leaves. The name is derived from clusters of very small red flowers in early spring, and although pretty, the flowers are not the main attraction: This tree has a great reputation for beautiful fall color, with some Red Maples displaying a blend of red hues and others completely scarlet.
Red Maples feature fast growth, with an upright shape when young that grows more rounded with age. They can reach 35 feet (or more) when mature. They require water in the summer and can be grown in soil that is wet longer than average. If the soil is shallow and the tree is watered too frequently, instead of infrequently and deeply, the roots could remain close to the surface. The variety called "Red Sunset" is one of the best, known for its ability to change to brilliant red quickly. It can hold this color reliably lasting two to three weeks before dropping quickly, usually before heavy rains start in the Fall -- a nice feature for those who prefer to rake dry leaves. Also good news to those who enjoy sunshine in the house in late Fall.
