To help ensure your investment develops properly, we've come up with some tips and suggestions from the pros.

1. To make sure you order the correct amount of material, measure the area of your planned lawn to determine the square footage. This can be done with a tape measure and should include the length and width. Multiply the length and the width to get your area. You can use our custom calculator to determine how much you'll need.

2. Without the correct pH, your seeds may not take root. But it can be easily corrected! Test kits are available to measure your soil pH, or bring in a sample to Lane Forest Products for testing. If the pH is less than 6.5, add 50 lbs. of Hi-Cal Lime per 1000 square feet to balance the pH for optimal growing conditions.

3. Low spots can inhibit growth by pooling water. Rolling and grading the lawn after installation will help keep your lawn solid, not spongy.

4. Hot, dry and windy conditions can destroy a newly seeded lawn. It is crucial that your newly seeded lawn has the proper amount of moisture to withstand these conditions. Keep seeded lawns constantly moist and gradually reduce the frequency, and increase the duration, of watering as the new grass matures.

5. Fertilization should occur in the third or fourth week using Wil-Gro 10-20-20, a high quality, turf starting fertilizer.

The success of your new lawn is determined by the amount of water you apply on a daily basis in the first few weeks, proper preparation of the soil, and follow-up with fertilization.
